England Tours: How They Got Shorter

England tours of Australia were typically enormous expeditions until jet travel transformed transcontinental journeys: following the introduction of five-Test series in 1894-95, all but one before 1958-59 involved the team being away from England for more than 200 days; the exception was the 1911-12 tour which spanned 190 days. From the 1930s onwards, tours of Australia were further elongated by additional matches afterwards in New Zealand. The longest five-Test tour before the Second World War tour was 229 days, in 1894-95.
